How Corrective Chin Surgery Works

What Genioplasty Can Correct

Genioplasty repositions or reshapes the chin bone to change its projection, height, or symmetry. Depending on your anatomy and goals, the chin can be moved forward or backward, shortened or lengthened, or adjusted to improve side-to-side asymmetry. Because genioplasty changes the chin point without moving the teeth, it may be appropriate when the bite is already aligned. If jaw or bite misalignment is also present, corrective jaw surgery may be recommended instead of or together with genioplasty.

What Genioplasty Can Correct

Planning and Recovery

Planning begins with an examination and imaging to evaluate chin position, facial proportions, bone structure, and bite. Your surgeon will explain the recommended movement, anesthesia, expected results, and alternatives. After surgery, swelling, bruising, soreness, and temporary numbness of the lower lip or chin can occur; diet and activity restrictions vary with the procedure. Risks may include bleeding, infection, healing problems, changes in sensation, asymmetry, or the need for additional treatment. Follow-up visits allow the surgical team to monitor healing.
